Herges to Cleveland/ Perez to Columbus

The Cleveland Indians today announced they have purchased the contract of RHP MATT HERGES from AAA Buffalo.  To allow room on the Major League roster for Herges, the Indians have optioned LHP RAFAEL PEREZ to AAA Columbus.  To create room on the 40-man roster for Herges, the Indians released RHP JUAN SALAS.

Herges, 39, was assigned to AAA Columbus on April 4 and so far this season with the Clippers he is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 4 saves in 11 appearances (10.0IP, 12H, 6R/ER, 5BB, 7K).  He was invited to Major League camp this spring after signing a minor league free agent contract in January and posted a mark of 0-0 w/a save and a 5.63 ERA in 8 exhibition outings (8.0IP, 10H, 6R/5ER, 4BB, 9K, .286AVG).  Matt owns a career Major League record of 40-34 with a 3.94 ERA and 34 saves in 537 career appearances (656.1IP, 701H, 287ER, 447K).  He wears #40.

Perez made 13 appearances this year for the Indians going 0-1 with a 15.19 ERA (10.2IP, 19H, 18R/ER, 9BB, 5K).

In addition, the Clippers have activated RHP Greg Aquino from the disabled list. Aquino has been disabled since April 23rd with a sore elbow.

Dice-K coming to Columbus? Quick Change is for sure.

The Red Sox used Daisuke Matsuzaka in a rehab appearnce Tuesday with Pawtucket. He threw 47 pitches, going 2 2/3 innings in a 4-0 win over Toledo.

Dice-K has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 15 with a mild right shoulder strain.

The Red Sox are expected to have Matsuzaka make one more rehab start. That start would come Sunday against the Clippers at Huntington Park if it’s with Pawtucket and on regular rest.

I’ll keep you posted!

Sowers pulled from start

Torey Lovullo announced about an hour before the game that Jeremy Sowers would not make his scheduled appearance because he may be needed by the Indians. No roster move has been announced.

Cleveland lost 10-6 in Toronto today and the bullpen continued to struggle, allowing seven runs. The Indians begin a two-game series in Boston on Wednesday.

Sowers is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four starts.

Eric Wedge had the following to say to the Cleveland Plain Dealer after the latest bullpen meltdown…

“We have to keep working hard to figure out how to get the guys that are here going again,” said Wedge. “We’ll continue to make changes. We’ll continue to try people whether they’re in Triple-A or not even in this organization. We’ve going to do whatever we have to do to get people down there that we can count on.”

Clippings 5-4-09

Sorry for not having much recently, but we’re in Norflok and here’s the skinny:

* Trevor Crowe joined the team today. He’ll wear #6 and bat second in tonight’s lineup. I’ll post the lineups and game notes shortly.

* Wes Hodges is again the DH. He has been battling a sore shoulder and hasn’t played third base since last Monday. Torey Lovullo listed him as day-to-day. Hodges took six straight pitches and struck out in his final at-bat yesterday.

* Stephen Head is not in the lineup. He hasn’t been seen (in the lineup) since Friday’s game in Durham. Head aggravated his knee sliding for a ball in right field. He is also day-to-day, but then again… aren’t we all?

* Reliever Scott Roehl tweaked his groin and was placed on the disabled list today. Roehl has appeared in three games with a 3.38 ERA, one save, six strikeouts, three walks.

* INF Cristo Arnal was promoted from Kinston before yesterday’s game. Arnal has only played one game above class A (Akron in ’07). Lovullo said he’ll only be used in an “emergency situation”. He was 8-for-26 (.308) in eight games with Kinston.

* Matt LaPorta and Luis Valbuena both started for Cleveland yesterday in Detroit. LaPorta was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and Valbuena was 0-for-2 with a walk. Justin Verlander punched out eleven batters in the Tigers 3-1 win.

Clippers Head Groundskeeper Colin Lattimer made this comment to me last week: “Your blog is ok, but (Indianapolis broadcaster) Scott McCauley’s is exceptional.” Translation – You’re blog stinks.

I’ll try to do better, but I’d love any suggestions. Many of you have been very complementary and passed on some good ideas… more photos, injury news, etc.

Feel free to e-mail your thoughts sleo@clippersbaseball.com

Goodbye Durham!

The Clippers split the four-game set on tabacco road… now it’s on the Norfolk. The Clips are 3-3 with four games left on the trip.
