Clippers add Mackowiak and Gosling

The Indians signed OF Rob Mackowiak and LHP Mike Gosling to minor league contracts today and assigned them to Columbus.

Mackowiak, 32, hit .182 (2-for-11) with 0 HR and 1 RBI in eight spring training games with the Mets. He was batting .389 with 1 HR an 10 RBI in 20 games with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. Last year, Mackowiak played 38 games with the Washington Nationals before being released. He later signed with Cincinnati and played 49 games with Louisville. He has played in the Major Leagues with Pittsburgh, Chicago (AL), San Diego, and Washington dating back to his debut with the Pirates in 2001.

, 28, went 7-1 with a 4.37 ERA in 21 games with Rochester (Twins). He pitched with Syracuse (Blue Jays) last season posting 5-6 record with a 3.67 ERA in 58 games. Gosling has pitching the Majors with Arizona and Cincinnati, most recently with Cincinnati in 2007.

If nothing else Mackowiak will be a great influence on the younger teammates. I’m a long-time Pirates fan and I remember Rob as a guy that hustled all the time. He ran out routine ground balls, turned singles into doubles, and generally played all-out all the time – definitely NOT a lolleygagger.

Gosling, and his SUPER agent, Scott Boras, quit on Rochester and the Twins. Hope it doesn’t happen twice in the same season.
