Carroll to Indians; Barfield back to Columbus
The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has activated INF JAMEY CARROLL from the 15-day disabled list. To allow room for Carroll on the 25-man roster the Indians optioned INF JOSH BARFIELD to AAA Columbus after last night’s game.
Carroll suffered a fractured left hand after being hit by a pitch in his final spring at bat on Saturday, April 4 in Houston vs. the Astros. He hit .295 (18-61) this spring with 7 RS, 2 2B & 6 RBI in 20 games. He embarked on a brief rehab assignment in AAA Columbus on Friday, May 8 and was 3 for 11 (.273) with 2 runs in 3 games, collecting 2 of the Clippers’ 4 hits last night (2-4, RS, 2B).
Barfield has appeared in 5 games this year for the Indians (3-3, 3RS, RBI).

From the Indians today…
The Cleveland Indians today recalled LHP JEREMY SOWERS from AAA Columbus. He will start tonight, Thursday, May 7 against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park. To allow room on the Indians 25-man roster, RHP VINNIE CHULK has been designated for assignment.
Sowers was optioned to AAA Columbus out of spring training on March 24 after going 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA (14.2IP, 20H, 10R/8ER, 7BB, 6K) in 6 games/ 2 starts in Arizona. So far this season at AAA Columbus he is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA (24.0IP, 23H, 6R/ER, 5BB, 22K) in 4 starts with the Clippers. His 2.25 ERA is tied for 9th in the International League. While at Columbus Sowers has pitched at least 5.0 innings in all 4 of his starts and in his last start on April 28 at Toledo allowed just 1 run on 5 hits in 7.0 innings of work as he earned his 1st victory of the season. He wears #45.
Chulk was 0-0 with a 3.75 ERA (12.0IP, 10H, 6R/5ER, 10BB, 4K) in 8 appearances out of the bullpen this year for the Indians.

Herges to Cleveland/ Perez to Columbus
The Cleveland Indians today announced they have purchased the contract of RHP MATT HERGES from AAA Buffalo. To allow room on the Major League roster for Herges, the Indians have optioned LHP RAFAEL PEREZ to AAA Columbus. To create room on the 40-man roster for Herges, the Indians released RHP JUAN SALAS.
Herges, 39, was assigned to AAA Columbus on April 4 and so far this season with the Clippers he is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 4 saves in 11 appearances (10.0IP, 12H, 6R/ER, 5BB, 7K). He was invited to Major League camp this spring after signing a minor league free agent contract in January and posted a mark of 0-0 w/a save and a 5.63 ERA in 8 exhibition outings (8.0IP, 10H, 6R/5ER, 4BB, 9K, .286AVG). Matt owns a career Major League record of 40-34 with a 3.94 ERA and 34 saves in 537 career appearances (656.1IP, 701H, 287ER, 447K). He wears #40.
Perez made 13 appearances this year for the Indians going 0-1 with a 15.19 ERA (10.2IP, 19H, 18R/ER, 9BB, 5K).
In addition, the Clippers have activated RHP Greg Aquino from the disabled list. Aquino has been disabled since April 23rd with a sore elbow.

Dellucci to Cleveland; Rundles back
The Cleveland Indians today activated OF DAVID DELLUCCI from the 15-day disabled list. To clear room on the 25-man roster the Indians optioned LHP RICH RUNDLES to AAA Columbus after Wednesday night’s game vs. Boston.
Dellucci was placed on the 15-day DL on March 30 after being scratched from the lineup of March 28 with a strained left calf. It was David’s sixth career trip to the disabled list at the Major League level. Dellucci began a 20-day rehab assignment at AAA Columbus on April 20 and hit .414 (12-29) with 1 2B, 1 3B & 2RBI in 7 games, hitting safely in all 7 contests (5G DH, 2G LF). He was 5 for 10 with runners on base and 3 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
The Indians now have 4 players on the Major League disabled list at present (Westbrook/S. Lewis/Hafner/Carroll).
Rundles returns to Columbus after being recalled prior to the game of April 29, but did not appear in the game.
